European and Benelux designs
General information
Since March 2002, automatic registration of new designs in the entire European Union is provided for by European legislation.
Furthermore, through a single registration, registered design protection in all countries of the European Union can be obtained.
It is also possible to obtain separate design protection in the Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg) by means of a so-called Benelux design.
Duration
An automatically registered Community design is valid for 3 years from the date of introduction on the European market.
Both a registered Community Design and a Benelux design can be kept in force for a maximum of 25 years.

Documents and information needed for registration of a Community design or a Benelux design
a) Full name and address of applicant(s).
b) Specification of the product embodying the design.
c) Graphic representation of the appearance of the product. In case of three-dimensional designs, at least three different views need to be provided.
d) Certified priority document, if priority is to be claimed.
